Honeywell-Sanchuan Smart Water Collaboration Targets Global Growth

Honeywell’s senior leadership team recently visited Sanchuan Smart Water in China, touring its digital factory showroom, automated production lines, ultrasonic water meter line, and the Sanchuan Elster joint-venture plant. The delegation met with Sanchuan’s chairman and management to discuss global business collaboration. For water professionals, this visit is worth watching because it links smart metering, industrial automation, and international water infrastructure modernization in one strategic conversation.

What Happened During the Visit

Honeywell was represented by Amol Motivala, president of Honeywell Smart Energy globally, George Bou Mitri, president of Honeywell META, and several regional sales and business development executives. Sanchuan was represented by chairman Li Jianlin, vice president Zuo Fuqiang, and the general manager of Sanchuan Elster. During the tour, the guests examined manufacturing processes for smart measurement products, including ultrasonic water meters, and observed Sanchuan’s digital production system.

In the closed-door conference, both parties explained their business portfolios and medium- to long-term development plans. The discussion covered market strategy, product upgrade roadmaps, digital solution implementation, and global cooperation opportunities. Honeywell reviewed demand patterns across different regions, while Sanchuan demonstrated progress in smart meter R&D, intelligent manufacturing, and water utility digitalization.

Why Pre-Filtration Matters in a Smart Water System

Digital water projects depend on accurate data. If an upstream filter fails and particles enter a water meter, a sampling line, or a membrane, measurement errors and process outages can follow. In municipal water plants, raw water quality changes with seasons and weather; in industrial and EDI facilities, feed water consistency is critical for protecting reverse osmosis membranes and electrodeionization stacks. A robust coarse filtration stage is not an optional accessory; it is a safeguard for both hardware and data.

Spuretek supports these applications with a range of depth and surface filtration products. The SHF big-flow pleated cartridges are built for large-volume municipal and industrial water intake, delivering low initial pressure drop and high dirt-holding capacity. Where operators need fast changeouts and lower cost, SFB filter bags can serve as primary or secondary filters in process loops. For hot water, CIP, and aggressive chemical service, SSSP stainless steel pleated cartridges provide reusable, durable filtration. In oilfield water handling, SPPO oilfield cartridges are designed to extend the service life of downstream equipment under challenging produced-water conditions.

Strategic Alignment and Market Potential

The two parties concluded that Honeywell’s 2025-2028 strategic planning is closely aligned with Sanchuan’s core product categories. They agreed to cooperate on new smart water meter development, intelligent upgrades of existing meters, and product configurations suitable for different overseas regions. Importantly, they emphasized high-suitability and cost-effective solutions rather than forcing the same product into every market. This approach should appeal to utilities and industrial buyers that want modern monitoring without oversized, unnecessarily expensive systems.

The follow-up roadmap includes integration of software and hardware platforms, cooperation on modules, components, and software services, and expansion into building and industrial automation opportunities. By referencing successful past projects in Australia, the partners made clear that they intend to extend proven models to other regions. Dedicated technical and business teams will be formed to turn these discussions into concrete packages.

What Buyers Should Consider

As automation spreads across global water networks, equipment suppliers will increasingly be judged by their ability to support the entire process, not just metering. Digital transformation depends on clean, consistent process water and reliable physical interfaces. An investment in smart meters without an investment in pre-filtration leaves a system vulnerable to false data and premature wear. Likewise, advanced downstream treatment trains require protection from coarse particles before membranes and ion-exchange media are exposed to stress.

Filtration Needs at Different Stages

At raw water intake, big-flow pleated cartridges handle high flow with reduced footprint. Before reverse osmosis and EDI, a security filter or bag filter removes particles that can foul the membrane surface. In cooling, boiler, and building automation loops, stainless pleated filters offer thermal stability and chemical compatibility. For oilfield water injection and production, specialized oilfield cartridges absorb the punishment of high solids load.
